Summer Camp
After a long year of work, school has ended.
Now it’s time for past friendships to be mended.
With camp beginning in just a week,
My anticipation is at its peak.
As my excitement continues to grow,
I cannot wait to see the familiar faces I know.
Rachel, Hannah, Paige, Zelda and Bailey.
Maybe from Boston I’ll see my best friend Kailey.
Working hard to pack my trunk,
It will feel like home on the top of my bunk.
Today is the day I arrive at camp,
It rained all night so it seems quite damp.
The sun starts to shine and it’s getting rather hot,
Time to do my swim test, I’ll give it my best shot.
Twenty two cabins all made of wood,
This is my brand new neighborhood.
We sit around the campfire gathered each night,
Telling scary stories that give us a fright.
Sailing and swimming on the water so blue,
So many activities I continue to do.
Ropes course, archery, tennis, and learning to sail,
But the highlight of each day is receiving my mail.
The next thing I known my parents here,
And for the first time I shed a tear.
This year I wrote a poem about summer camp and I believe that my poem relates to my final project position statement which is, “ some pursue happiness─ others create it.” My poem is about how at summer camp I am not allowed any of the glamorous items such as a phone, a laptop, a television, or even a hair straightener, but I am still able to have the time of my life without all of those appliances. There are so many teenagers who are addicted to their phones, and most would have a very hard time going a whole day without using their phones. Some may even define their phones as being the most important item of theirs. When I am without my phone during the summer, I find that I am able to truly create happiness because I am able to embrace the amazing things in nature and enjoy the company of my friends. If I were to have my phone I would be pursuing happiness by looking at social media and looking at what others are doing, obviously wanting to do the same thing to try and find happiness in those activities, but without my phone I am able to create so much happiness because I am focusing on my own life and the amazing people and nature around me. By going to summer camp I am able to create my own happiness, rather than pursuing happiness because I am able to focus on the “here and now” of my life and relish all the wonderful things around me.
